In that case, the "vulture-eye" of the old man as a father figure may symbolize parental surveillance, or the paternal principles of right and wrong.
When Fortunato asks for proof, Montresor shows him his trowel, the implication being that Montresor is an actual stonemason. Above all, Poe is a formalist for whom the technique and pattern of a poem, not its so-called theme or human interest, is its sole reason for being.
The sound increased; it was "a low, dull quick sound. The narrator wonders how it was possible that they did not hear the loud beating which was becoming louder and louder.
On the psychological level of the story, however, the tale that the heart tells that so obsesses the narrator is the tale that every heart tells.
The narrator seems to have a lot of sympathy for the old man. Whether or not that description is an accurate account of how the work was composed, it is surely a description of how Poe wished the poem to be read.
We all know that in moments of stress and fright our own heartbeat increases so rapidly that we feel every beat. We have here, then, a narrator who believes that he is not mad because he can logically describe events which seem to prove him to be mad.
The whole plot deals with the inebriation and, ultimately, the live burial of the antagonist, Fortunato. But the narrator does not draw back and, after some time, decides to open the lantern. In fact he knows exactly how scared the old man is, having felt the same mortal terror before.
The old man with whom the narrator lives has a clouded, pale, blue "vulture-like" eye, which distresses the narrator so much that they plot to murder the old man, despite also insisting that they love the old man.
Not only does he never leave the house, but he also cannot tolerate light, sound, touch, odor, or taste. The narrator describes the sight of the eye and sound of the heart as if he is really seeing them, and ascribes the violence of his reactions to his naturally sensitive senses. Montresor may not have been entirely certain of the exact nature of the insults for which he expected Fortunato to atone. He admits that his motives for the act to follow are curious, that there was no passion that provoked it. Montresor has strategically planned for this meeting by sending his servants away to the carnival.
Although the sound would remain the same, however, the thought conveyed by the sound should constantly vary. After a week of this activity, the narrator decides, somewhat randomly, that the time is right actually to kill the old man.
While the carnival usually indicates joyful social interaction, Montresor distorts its merry abandon, turning the carnival on its head.
His house had once been noble and respected, but has fallen slightly in status. No one who is interested in the short-story form can afford to ignore his ideas or his fiction. During the time period of this short story some coffins were given methods of alerting the outside in the event of live entombment.
